A Healthier You In 2019

A Healthier You In 2019

healthly you 2019

Did you make any new years resolutions this year? It’s usually around February that those good intentions get left behind but if you’re still feeling motivated to make some self-improvements then why not follow these tips to achieve and maintain a healthier lifestyle in 2019.

Eat healthy

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is the best way of getting all the nutrients your body needs to work efficiently. If, like me, you have a sweet tooth and often suffer from the dreaded sugar cravings then try to make some healthy swaps. Fruit and vegetables in particular are packed with vitamins and antioxidants, which are designed to give you energy and sustenance and are also good for keeping a healthy immune system to fight off illness. It is recommended to eat at least five portions of fruit and veg every day, but there’s no harm aiming for more!

Get more sleep

Some people need more sleep than others but on average we should be getting around eight hours sleep at night. A lack of sleep can make us stressed so being able to recharge the batteries can help us keep functioning, both physically and mentally. It may help you to sleep better if you can introduce a winding down ritual before bedtime – it could be running a relaxing bath or reading a book. Try to limit the use of computers, TVs and smartphones at least an hour before you go to sleep to give your mind chance to shut down.

Keep on moving

Whether it’s sitting down for most of the day in your office job or coming home and lounging in front of the TV, it’s no wonder that many of us lead a sedentary lifestyle. With busy schedules, finding the time to exercise can be hard but not only is it great for making you physically fit, it can also boost your mood and improve your mental capacity. It’s recommended to do at least 30 mins of exercise at least 3 times a week – find something you really enjoy doing so it doesn’t become a chore.

Drink more water

If you choose to do one thing this year, then aim to drink more water. Around 60% of your body is made up of water so it’s essential that we drink enough to keep our bodies working to their full potential. Drinking water has numerous health benefits. It can:

  • – Cleanse toxins from your body
  • – Help to control calorie intake by making you feel fuller
  • – Increase your energy levels
  • – Keep your bodily fluids well balanced

Try to drink around 8 glasses (approx. 2 litres per day). Add sugar-free squash or drink green/herbal tea if you prefer something with a little bit of flavour.

Your mood and how you feel is a very important part of your mental health and wellbeing – and can also have an impact on how you feel physically. Whoever said laughter was the best medicine wasn’t wrong – acting as a stress reliever it really can be beneficial to your health. Try to spend time with loved ones who make you happy and relaxed; put on your favourite comedy film or think of a moment in your life that really make you laugh at loud – you’ll be surprised at how positive you feel after just a few minutes of rib-tickling behaviour!
